Make-a-Wish Fundraising Dinner

A fundraising dinner was held for Make-a-Wish on April 24th, 2010. Members of Turners 1 were invited as guests of the Make-a-Wish administration. Because of our club's commitment to their cause they felt we were deserving of the honor. President Steve Imerese, Jim Hilburger, past president Jim Vasi, Bob Ball, Rich Mialki and their wives attended. They were treated to a top notch dinner at the Seneca Niagara Casino. Rockler Grand Reopening

The Rockler Grand Reopening was held on April 17th, 2010. The entire store was redone. The Turners were invited to turn and sell items for Make-a-Wish. Check out the photos here.

Aspire Toy Drop off

The Aspire toy drop off was held in December 2009. The clubs make wooden toys for the challenged students at the Aspire School on Union Rd. We then host a Christmas party where the kids can pick any toy they want. There is music, food and a whole lot of fun. To see what happened click here.

Erie County Fair 2009

The Erie County Fair is finally over. The booth we run for donations to Make-A-Wish was a success. We had alot of fun raising money for a good cause. Even though we didn't meet last years amount, we still raised $13,239.40 for the kids. Click on this link to see the action.

Erie County Historical Society

Turners 1 set up booth at the Erie County Historical Society. The purpose was to spread the joys of turning. They had a great display with a variety of items. There was even a tv crew there. See the pics here.

Website Transition

The WNYWoodturners website, created, expanded, and maintained by Kurt Hertzog from 2001 through the end of 2008, has been transitioned to a new webmaster. On January 1st 2009, Paul Mazuchowski took responsibility for the maintenance, operation, and expansion of the website.

How to Turn Class at Barb's Barn

On November 22, 2008 there was a Basic “How to Turn Class” class at Barbs Barn. There was a morning demo followed by hands on turning. To assist students, mentors were present to give individual instruction throughout the day. You can see photos of the session here.

The Turners 2 September meeting was be held on Thursday, September 11th. The meeting location was back in the woodshop at the Hamburg Middle School Technology Shop. John O'Neil did the demo for the evening showing how to do inlays. You can see photos of the meeting.

Lockport Turners Barb's Barn Session

On Saturday, September 20th, the Lockport Turners held a Barb's Barn session. The attendees were from all of the area clubs. Eric Smith and Marc Hall were the instructors for the day. Photos of the session have been posted for your enjoyment.

Turners 1 September '08 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting was be held on Thursday, September 4th at Maryvale School. There was a good turnout for the meeting on a hot, late summers evening. The demo for the evening was made by Kurt Hertzog. Kurt demonstrated his techniques to simplify the sharpening process for your turning tools. Pictures of the meeting are posted here.

Turners 2 Picnic

The Turners 2 Family Picnic was held on Thursday, August 21 at the Saint Nicodemus Lutheran Church Picnic Grove in East Aurora. The hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks were provided by the club. Everyone brought other dishes to pass. There were a few, free turning related door prizes given away. You can see the photos of the picnic here.

Erie County Fair

The Turners 1 and Turners 2 had their usual Erie County Fair presence along with the Pembroke and Lockport clubs. The event ran from Thursday, August 7th through Sunday, August 17th. The Turners 1 August meeting was held on Tuesday, August 5th. The meeting location was held in the Binner Community Center. The meeting was dedicated to final preparations for the fair. Pizza and pop was provided. No photos of the meeting were taken.

Audubon Library Display

The WNYWoodturners were invited to show examples of their work in the Audubon Library during the month of March 2008. The exhibit was postponed from the original November 2007 date due to problems with the display area at the facility. You can take a look at a photo of the display here.

Aspire 2007 Toy Drop Off

The WNYWoodturners Annual Toy Drop Off took place on Tuesday, December 11th. The toys that had been made during the year for the event were taken to the Aspire facility for the toy party. As in past years, Jim Shimwell headed up the effort. Club members made kid safe toys for them to pick out and keep. You can see photos of the "club Santas" and the event here.

Erie County Fair

The Erie County Fair ran from Thursday, August 9th through Sunday, August 19th. The Make-A-Wish fundraising effort at the fair was supported by the four area AAW chapters of woodturners. This year the receipts set a new record. You can see photos of the event here.

Intermediate Kids Hands On Class at the Barn

Bob Rosand held an "Intermediate Kids Hands on Barn Session" on Saturday, June 9th. There was no charge for the workshop. The barn, Bob's time, travel, and talent are being donated with the other costs being covered by an AAW grant. The participants received a 1 year AAW membership, free lunch, turning video as well as other "perks". Photos of the day are posted for your review.

Turners 1 June '07 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 7th. Milt Ehrenberg took a group photo outside. There was no demo scheduled. After the photo, it was a pizza and soda party. Bill Grumbine Bowl Workshop

There were two days of Bill Grumbine hands on workshops held at Barb's Barn. The Friday and Saturday sessions were well attended by members of the four local clubs. Bill Grumbine, famous for his bowl videos, demonstrated the his techniques and worked with the attendees as they repeated his methods. Jake Debski was the organizer and host for Bill. Jim Hilburger was Bill's assistant for the Friday session and Kurt Hertzog assisted Bill on Saturday. Photos of the barn sessions are posted here.

Turners 1 March '07 Meeting

The Turners 1 March meeting was held on Thursday, March 1st at 7:30PM. The Make-a_Wish foundation awarded the club a plaque in honor of the ongoing contributions to the charity. The demo was done by Paul Madej of the Lockport Woodworkers. He demonstrated using polyester resin to create pen blanks, then turning them. Photos of the meeting are posted for your review.

Sorby Tools Demo

The Sorby Tools factory people put on a demonstration of their product line on Wednesday, February 28th . The demo was held at the Pembroke High School in Corfu NY. The demo ran from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Many of the tools in the Sorby product line were demonstrated. The Rockler Store had a mini-store setup with special pricing on Sorby products, both on hand and ordered. There was a drawing for a free Rockler Mini Lathe provided by Rockler.

The Turners 1 January meeting was held on Thursday, January 4th. There was a nice turnout for election night. The elections were held with all offices being unopposed. Jim Vasi stepped down after many years of service as President and was replaced by Steve Imerese. All of the other officers returned to their previous offices. The Turners 2 December meeting was held on Thursday, December 14th. There was a small turnout for the meeting with there just being enough for a quorum. Fundamentals Hands-On Class at Barb's Barn

It was a full house for the all-day, hands-on, turning fundamentals class at Barb's Barn on Sunday, November 12th with 11 students attending. Turners 2 November '06 Meeting

Kids Hands On at the Barn

There was a hands-on kids woodturning session at Barb's Barn on Saturday, November 4th. It was for kids from 12 to 18 and was be taught by Bob Rosand. Each of the students was assisted by an experienced turning mentor. Pictures of the event are posted here.

Totally Turning Symposium

The fourth annual Totally Turning Symposium was held on Saturday and Sunday, October 14th and 15 th. It was held at the Convention Center in Albany. Demonstrators included Dick Sing, Cindy Drozda, David Nittmann, Malcolm Tibbetts, Rex Burningham, Keith Tompkins, Angelo Iafrate, Kurt Hertzog, and more. You can see the details at Totally Turning.

The October Turners 2 meeting was held on Thursday, October 12th. The annual elections of officers was held. Next years officers will be Kurt Hertzog - President, John O'Neil - Vice President, Muriel Kummer - Secretary, and Pat Bogan - Treasurer. The evening's demonstration was done by Rich Mialki. Turners 1 October '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 5th. It was the annual auction with donateds items being auctioned for the benefit of the club. After a short business meeting, show and tell, the remainder of the evening was dedicated to the auction. Take a look at the photos.

Woodworking Show 2006

As in past years, the WNYWoodturners 1 and 2 had a booth at the Woodworking Show. We've used the booth to demonstrate woodturning to the attendees and promote awareness of the local AAW chapters. This year, we invited the Lockport and Pembroke clubs to participate. This gave the attendess of the event a chance to meeting members from all of the four local clubs, make contacts, and potentially join based on convenient location. Turners 2 September '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 September meeting was held on Thursday, September 14th at the regular meeting room in the Hamburg Middle School at 7:30PM. There was a good turnout for the first of the regular season meeting with about 35 members attending. The nominations for candidates for next years officers were opened. The demonstration for the for the evening was done by Kurt Hertzog. Kurt's demo was on the various products, techniques, and tips for sanding your turnings. Photos of the meeting have been posted.

Turners 1 September '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting was held on Thursday, September 7th. There was a nice turnout for the meeting. The demo for the evening was done by Art Griebner. Art showed his technique for making the famous "fly houses". Take a look at the photos of the meeting.

Erie County Fair

The Erie County Fair was held from Wednesday, August 9th through Sunday, August 20th. The Turners 1 and Turners 2 held their Make-A-Wish charity fundraiser at the fair. We'll had our usual spot on the porch of the Woodcarvers building. Steve Imerese, Rich Mialki, Bob Ball, and Al Schultz were the organizers for the fair fund raising event this year. For the last couple of years, we've raised over $6000 each year for the Western NY chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year we took in a record $7756.50. Since we started keeping track in 1999, our contributions to Make-A-Wish total over $43,800. You can see photos of this year. Turners 2 August '06 Meeting

The August meeting of the Turners 2 was held on Thursday, August 10th at Jed Donahue's house. Typical of summer meetings, the meeting was lightly attended. Jed did the demonstration for the evening. He did a primer on mounting and turning bowls. Photos of the meeting are posted.

Turners 1 August '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 August meeting was held on Thursday, August 3rd. Many members brought in items for the Erie County Fair effort. The weather was still hot and the turnout was light with about 25 members attending. Jim Vasi did the demonstration showing his tips and tricks for doing bottle stoppers and stick pens. Turners 2 July '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 July meeting was held at Mike Zientek's shop. We had a turnout of about 20 members. The main business was the final preparations for the Erie County Fair. After a short show and tell, we had a great demo of a portable saw mill by John Bathrick. The photos of the meeting are posted here. Turners 1 July '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 July meeting was held on Thursday, July 6th at 7:30 PM. It was "pizza and pop" night. The evening was the major planning and signup meeting for the upcoming Erie County Fair. There was a nice assortment of show and tell items. Take a look at the photos of the meeting.

Turners 2 June '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 8th. There was a smaller than usual turnout with about 30 members at the meeting. The show and tell was followed by the review and critique of the gifts for the school staff. Thanks to all of those who brought in their donations. The demonstration was on sharpening and using the Ellsworth (or Irish Grind) bowl gouge by Kurt Hertzog. You can see the photos if you weren't able to attend.

Turners 1 June '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 1st with a nice turnout. The meeting featured the presentation of the Jim Hilburger Award. This year's recipient was Bob Ball. This award is presented each year to a member who has exhibited exceptional contributions to the organization. The demonstration was made by Barry Yavener. Barry explained his techniques for designing and creating "sculptured art". He also showed some of his latest work. You can find the meeting photos here.

St. Ambrose School Demonstration

On Wednesday, May 24th, Jim Hilburger and Gary Jones took the famous Yo-Yo and Traveling Top demonstration to St. Ambrose School in South Buffalo. The audience was over 300 kids and teachers from K to 8. Not only did Jim and Gary wow them all with their turning prowess but they handed out over 100 tops as well. Turners 2 May '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 April meeting was held on Thursday, May 11th. It was the first club meeting after the Jimmy Clewe's workshop so there was a host of lidded boxes done there. The meeting featured the presentation of the "Hilburger Giving Tree Award" to Barb Berger. Jim Meier did the evenings demonstration. Jimmy Clewes Hands On Workshops

On Saturday and Sunday, May 6th and 7th, the WNYWoodturners2 hosted Jimmy Clewes for hands on workshops at Barb's Barn. There were 11 turners each day that had the chance to watch Jimmy demo and then work on their own project. Both days were identical with the projects being the Japanese style lidded box and a three center candlestick holder. In addition to the projects, attendees had the chance to work with Jimmy on any of their own special needs. You can see the workshop photos here.

Turners 2 March '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 March meeting was held on Thursday, March 9th. There was a great turnout with over 45 members attending the meeting. An excellent demonstration on Springett style ball turning was done by Jerry Weisedel. Meeting photos have been posted.

Turners 1 March '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 March meeting had a pretty light turnout with only 25 members attending due to the snow storm that hit during the afternoon. In spite of the lighter than normal attendance, there was a nice assortment of items in the show and tell portion of the meeting. Sam Ciccia, from the WNYWoodturners 2, was the demonstrator for the evening. Sam did a wonderful job showing his techniques for turning candle stick holders. Take a look at the meeting photos.

Fisher Price Toy Museum Demonstation

The Turners 2 put on a toy turning demonstration at the Fisher Price Toy Museum in East Aurora on Saturday, February 18th. The club usually does one or more of these each year at the Museum. It's a fun day with the attendees of the museum getting to watch as tops, pens, whistles, and other wooden items are made. This year, Jake Debski, Paul Mazuchowski, Jed Donahue, Rich Mialki, and Jim Hilburger did the honors. You can take a look at the photos of the event.

Turners 2 February '06 Meeting

The Turners 2 February meeting was held on Wednesday, February 8th with about 45 members attending the meeting. One of the events of the meeting was the donation of a new Jet VS Mini lathe along with a Oneway chuck to the Technology Shop of the school. The demonstration was done by Kurt Hertzog. The February meeting of the Turners 1 was held on Thursday, February 2nd with about 45 members attending the meeting. The demonstration was done by Kurt Hertzog. The Turners 2 January meeting was held on Thursday, January 12th at 7:30 PM. There was a great turnout for the meeting with 48 members attending. The show and tell featured a nice variety of items. Turners 1 January '06 Meeting

The Turners 1 January meeting was held on Thursday, January 5th at 7:30 PM. There was a standing room only crowd. The show and tell brought many great items. The demonstration was made by Al Schultz. Al demonstrated his method for making letter openers and other craft sale items. You can look at the photos of the meeting if you were unable to attend.

Aspire 2005 Christmas Toy Drop-Off

The Turners 1 made their annual Christmas toy drop for the kids in Aspire. Hand made toys, made by members during year, are collected and delivered to the children. On Monday, December 5th, the "Santas" loaded up Steve Imerese's "sleigh" and made their run. Take a look at the pictures of the event. Thanks to all of the Santas and Santa's helpers who participated in the design, build, paint, and delivery of this huge effort over the course of the year.

Bob Rosand at Barb's Barn

There was a hands on workshop at Barb's Barn in November. The Friday and Saturday workshops focused on ornaments but typical of Bob's sessions, they covered lots of fundamentals and any special needs of the attendees. The sessions were open to all of the area turners and were a fund raiser for Eddie Berger's memorial. Father Jim stopped by the Saturday session to watch some of the activities. Turners 2 October '05 Meeting

The Turners 2 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 13th. There was a short business meeting including our annual elections. Amherst Museum Demonstration

The Turners 1 were invited to demonstrate woodturning at the Amherst Museum on Saturday, October 8th. Jim Vasi, Bob Ball, Rich Mialki, and Bill Perry volunteered and spent the day turning to show the process and the end results. Take a look at the photos of the event.

Turners 1 October '05 Meeting

The October meeting of the Turners 1 was held on Thursday, October 6th. There was a short business meeting, show & tell, and then our annual auction. President Jim Vasi highlighted the delivery of our Make-A-Wish check of over $6300. to the local chapter office. The auction was a lot of fun with bargains galore, raising $275 for the club. Barb's Barn Session

There was an all day hands on session at Barb's Barn on Saturday, October 1st from 9 am to 3 pm. Paul Mazuchowski was the instructor and taught the attendees his technique for making turned flowers. It was a great workshop learning to make these unique turnings. Photos of the workshop have been posted.

Turners 2 September '05 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting was held on Thursday, September 8th at the Hamburg Middle School. There was a nice assortment of show and tell items. Nominations for next month's election were held. The current slate of officers have accepted nominations for office for the next year. Elections will be held next month. The demonstration was done by Kurt Hertzog. His demonstration was on sharpening turning tools, covering proper tool angles, grinders, jigs, and techniques. Photos of the meeting are posted for those unable to attend.

Turners 1 September '05 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting drew around 35 members. The EC Fair team announced that this year was a record year in spite of the lower Fair attendance. In past couple of years, the effort raised a little over $5000 each year for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year we raised over $6300 for the charity. A special "thank you" to all of the members of Turners 1 and Turners 2 (and their spouses) who staffed the sales booth, did demonstrations, made items for the effort, helped pick up stuff, and a myriad of other things done to make the effort a success. Well done. Our demonstration for the evening was done by Paul Mazuchowski from Turners 2. Paul demonstrated his technique for making wooden flowers. Erie County Fair

This year's Erie County Fair has come and gone, running from Wednesday, August 10th through Sunday, August 21st. This year both the Turners 1 and Turners 2 staffed the booth at the fair turning and selling turned items for the Make A Wish Foundation. In the past, we've made over $5000 for the charity each year. We had a great year and raised over $6300. for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of WNY. Since we've started keeping track in 1999, this year's donation brings the total to a shade over $36,000. Thanks to all of the folks that worked the fair, provided turnings to sell, and took photos of the event. It was a great time and there is a photo spread of event posted. Turners 2 August '05 Meeting

There was an Fair turning and preparation meeting held at Barb's Barn on Monday, August 8th. About 20 members showed up and there was a brief show and tell prior to the turning sessions. Turners 1 August '05 Meeting

The Turners 1 August meeting on Thursday, August 4th drew a nice crowd considering the temperature was in the 90s. The meeting was the last meeting to complete preparation for the upcoming Erie County Fair Charity Fundraising effort. After taking care of the business for the Fair, we had a quick show and tell prior to a great demonstration on the safe use and proper maintenance of chain saws. The presentation was made by Dan Mosher. Dan is a professional with one of the local tree services, The Tree Doctor. Photos of the meeting have been posted for those unable to attend.

AAW 2005 Symposium

Turners 2 July '05 Meeting

The Turners 2 July meeting was held on a hot and humid Monday evening, July 18th. Our host was Jed Donahue. The meeting was lightly attended with only about 15 members attending. Regardless of the small crowd, a good time was had by all as we had a variety of demos on craft show items in preparation for the EC Fair Fundraising effort. Turners 1 '05 Annual Picnic

The Turners 1 Annual Picnic was held at Noco Park, in Tonawanda, on Thursday, July 7th. Great weather made the event a big success with Milt Ehrenberg and his wife Grace doing their usual wonderful job. Thanks to Milt and all of those who helped at the event as well as before and after. The efforts included purchasing foods and supplies, setup & cleanup, cooking, making desserts, soliciting and donating prizes, and more. Rockler Tormek Demo

There was a demonstration at the Rockler store on Saturday, June 11th on using the Tormek Sharpening System. The demo was done by Turners 2 member Kurt Hertzog. The half day, ongoing demo covered the setup of the Tormek, the various jigs available, and using the system to sharpen a host of edged tools. Photos of the demo are posted for those interested.

The Turners 2 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 9th. In spite of the sweltering heat, about 30 members showed up for our last meeting at the school until this fall. The demo was done on after turning surface enhancements. Jim Meier did a great job showing and demonstrating the wide variety of tools and techniques available to us all. Turners 1 June '05 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting drew a nice crowd of about 45 members. At the meeting, Jim Shimwell was awarded the Jim Hilburger Award by President Jim Vasi. This honor is bestowed on a member who continually goes above the call of duty in service to the club. Congratulations Jim! Rockler Wolverine Sharpening Jig Demo

The local Rockler store had a Oneway Wolverine Sharpening Jig demo on Saturday, May 21st. It was a continuing demo for the morning and was done by Kurt Hertzog. It covered the jigs available and the techniques for setting and using them for various turning tools. You can find the pictures here.

Turners 2 May '05 Meeting

The Turners 2 May meeting was held on Thursday, May 12th. There was a nice turnout with about 35 members attending. In addition to the usual meeting events, we had our annual school donation program with a great variety of great gifts for the school staff. Peppermill Workshop at Barb's Barn

There was a peppermill workshop held at Barb's Barn on Friday, May 6th. The workshop was filled with members of the area clubs. Jim Hilburger was the instructor for the class. Over the course of the day, Jim demonstrated his techniques, tips, and tricks for making peppermills. Everyone in the class made their own mill over the course of the day. Turners 1 May '05 Meeting

The Turners 1 May meeting, on Thursday, May 5th, drew the largest crowd of the season. There were 5 new members inducted into membership at the meeting. The presentation was on vacuum chucks and vacuum chucking. Frank Stanko and Jim Hilburger did a great demonstration covering the how vacuum systems work, how to buy or make the various components required for a system, and how to use one effectively in your turning techniques. Jimmy Clewes Hands-On Workshop at Barb's Barn

There was a hands-on turning session with Jimmy Clewes at Barb's Barn on Sunday, May 1st. The class was full as Jimmy spent the day working with everyone on a variety of projects geared to their individual level. As usual, everyone there had a lathe to use. We had 10 turners from the various local area turning clubs. It was a great learning session with everyone completing several projects during the day. Jimmy Clewes Demo

On Saturday, April 30th, the nearby Pembroke Woodturners Guild hosted an all day demo with Jimmy Clewes. All of the area clubs were invited. Jimmy did four projects throughout his day long demonstration held at the Pembroke High School. Those attending were treated with lots of fun, great turning instruction, and the host of prizes provided by Rockler and Woodchuckers. Photos of the event have been posted.

Turners 2 April '05 Meeting

The Turners 2 April meeting was held on Thursday, April 14th. The meeting drew one of the biggest crowds in recent times. There were about 50 members in attendance. The evening had 3 separate presentations made by Ann Raby, Muriel Kummer, and Jim Hilburger. Ann did a safety presentation along with the fundamentals of using the roughing gouge. Muriel showed her techniques for making and doing the surface decoration on wine stoppers. Jim showed how to make your own power sanding pads and discs in a super low cost way. Turners 1 April '05 Meeting

The April meeting of the Turners 1 was held on Thursday, April 7th. We had a nice crowd with 45 members attending. The demonstration was done by Steve Imerese. Steve demonstrated the planning and actual fabrication of segmented layers for segmented works, along with great tips and tricks he's learned along his years of turning. It was a great demo. Beginner Bowl Turning Classes at Barb's Barn

There were two sessions of beginners bowl turning at Barb's Barn on Friday and Saturday, March 19th and 20th. Jim Vasi taught both classes to members of the four local clubs. Rockler Bowl Turning Demo

There was a Bowl Turning Demo at Rockler on Saturday, February 5th to cover the fundamentals of bowl turning. The demo was done by Kurt Hertzog. Also demonstrating at the store that day was Jim Vasi. Turners 1 January '05 Meeting

The attendance at the January Turners 1 meeting was a bit sparse due to the weather. The club elections were held with Jim Vasi re-elected at President. There were several changes discussed and passed in the by-laws. The demonstration was made by Jim Vasi. Jim focused on the care and feeding of the bandsaw. He did an intensive demo on how to align, adjust, repair, and use the tool. He also showed many tips and tricks along with various projects that can be done on the saw. Aspire Toy Giveaway

As is the custom, members of the Turners 1 had their Christmas toy giveaway as the local Aspire facility. The club members make toys throughout the year for the event. This year's Santas at the toy giveaway included the club's project leader Jim Shimwell along with his wife Jacquie, Ben Klinger, Carm Queeno, Ron Karaszewski, Ray Bissonette, Steve Imerese, Harry Vogel, Rich Mialki, Jim Hilburger, Joe Guppenberger, and Art Griebner. Turners 2 December '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 December meeting was held on Thursday, December 9th. The students Christmas presentation was also held that night. Parking was at a premium but both the musical and the Turners 2 meeting were big successes. There were about 30 members in attendance with several new members joining as well as a visit from one of our past members, John Lunney. The presentation was on square turning. Toy Museum Turning Demonstration

On Saturday, December 4th, Barb Berger and Jim Hilburger visited the Fisher Price Toy Museum in East Aurora to do a turning demo. As in past years, they were invited to demo the top turning and sell the turnings for the benefit of charity. Jim and Barb wowed them as usual with the visitors, both young and old, enjoying the show. Jim did his usual top turning, decorating, and coloring in less than 2 minutes while Barb helped and also worked the sales table. Take a look at the photos.

Turners 1 December '04 Meeting

The December Turners 1 meeting was well attended with more than 40 members at the meeting. It was our Pizza Party meeting with the club springing for the pizza and pop. Many members also brought in dishes to pass that ranged from homemade cookies and brownies to shrimp platters. There was plenty choose from. The evenings presentation was made by Jim Robarr, an amateur blacksmith. Jim did an excellent demonstration on the fundamentals of toolmaking. Take a look at the photos of the meeting.

Sharpening Workshop at Barb's Barn

There was a sharpening workshop held at Barb's Barn on Sunday, November 21st. Even with the few last minute cancellations, we had 8 students for the all day session. The day covered safety, equipment and fixtures selection and use, tool geometries, sharpening techniques, and tips and tricks. Everyone had plenty of grinder time to properly shape and sharpen their entire arsenal. The instructor was Kurt Hertzog. Photos of the workshop are posted for your review.

West Penn Hardwoods Tour

The Turners 2 took a tour of the West Penn Hardwoods in Olean on Saturday, November 13th. The other area clubs were invited to attend and we had members of the 4 clubs attend the event. Rocky and Kim Mehta hosted us. We had an interesting tour of the facility and a chance to shop for any of our wood needs through out the day. The folks at West Penn not only had a donuts and coffee for our arrival but also provided lunch. It was a nice day with lots of bargains to be had. Everyone shopped 'till they dropped. Turners 2 November '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 November meeting was held on Wednesday, November 10th at 7:30 PM. The meeting was our annual fundraising auction. We had a nice turnout for the meeting and a great auction. Lots of items, ranging from lathes to wood to lessons, all at a good prices. The club raised $450 at the auction. Meeting photos are posted.

Rockler Ornament Turning Demo

As part of the Saturday morning demonstration series, Rockler held an ornament turning demonstration on Saturday, November 6th. The demo ran from 9:30 to 11:30 in the morning with good attendance throughout. Kurt Hertzog did the demonstration. Pictures of the event are posted for those unable to attend.

Turners 1 November '04 Meeting

The Turners 1 November meeting was held on Thursday, November 4th. It was our annual auction. We had about 35 members attend the meeting. After a short business meeting, the balance of the meeting was the auction. Photos of the meeting are available for your review.

Rockler Freedom Pen Turn-a-Thon

On Saturday, October 23rd, Rockler held their second nationwide Freedom Pen Turn-a-Thon. Customers were able to visit any Rockler store and turn a pen for the troops overseas. Rockler donated all of the materials and had experienced woodturners on hand to help those new to woodturning. Members of the WNY Woodturners 1 &2, the Pembroke Woodturners Guild, and the Lockport Woodturners were at the Buffalo Rockler store to lend a hand. Altogether, the club members and customers turned 165 pens. These will be collated with all of the other pens from the Rockler stores nationwide and will be shipped to the troops overseas. Rockler Penturning Demo

As a prelude to the second Freedom Pen Turn-a-thon of the year, the Rockler stores nationwide held a penturning demo on Saturday, October 16th. Kurt Hertzog did the demo for the local Rockler store. It drew nice audiences over the course of the day. While onlookers were not allowed to make pens, they got a good course in what's involved. Hopefully, many will return on Saturday, October 23rd when they can do a hands on and make pens to send to our troops. Photos of the day, for your review.

Turners 2 October '04 Meeting

There was a nice turnout for the October Turners 2 meeting held on Thursday, October 14th. It was election night for next years officers. Elections were held and Kurt Hertzog, Ann Raby, Gary Jones, and Jay Ferrand were elected as President, Vice President, Sectretary, and Treasurer respectively. After a variety of interesting show and tell items, the presentation was made by Rocky Mehta of West Penn Hardwoods. West Penn Hardwoods imports and sells a wide variety of exotic woods specializing in Central and South American species. After an interesting presentation on the types of woods, their key characteristics, and some interesting stories of the business, everyone had the opportunity to shop. Turners 1 October '04 Meeting

The Turners 1 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 7th. There was a good turnout for the meeting. The club announced that the fundraiser held at the Erie County Fair raised over $5000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Western NY. The demonstration at the meeting was made by Kurt Hertzog on overcoming problems using the skew chisel. Photos of the meeting are posted for those who couldn't attend.

Turners 2 September '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 September meeting drew about 30 members. There was a nice selection of show and tell items ranging from the biggest executive top you've ever seen to Flying Angels. The evenings presentation on making turning tools at home was made by Frank Stanko. Pictures of of the meeting are posted.

The Turners 1 September meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 2nd was cancelled due to a room availability problem.

ToyFest 2004

The Turners 2 were invited to demonstrate and have a sales booth at the ToyFest this year. We had a double booth space in the Crafts section of the festival. The club has been stockpiling items for sale to raise money for our selected charity. Barb Berger was the chair for the event with many helpers. Thank you to Barb Berger, Jim Hilburger, Jake Debski, Paul Mazuchowski, Kurt and Kathy Hertzog, Gary Jones, Linda Spors, and Rich Mialki for working the booth during the weekend festival. Thanks to all of the members who worked on items during the year and donated them to the cause and a special thanks to Rick Wierzbicki for the loan of his brand new tent. The weather was terrible with torrential downpours on both days but we managed to have a lot of fun, make lots of friends, and raise $275 for the kids. Take a look at the pictures.

Erie County Fair 2004

As in years past, the Turners 1 sold turned items at the Erie County Fair to raise money for Make-a-Wish of Western New York. Thanks to all who made things ahead of time and for all the workers turning and selling at the fair. We had a great year with plenty of nice weather, good friends revisiting our booth, lots of fun with those working at the show. Thanks to all for a job well done. Turners 2 August '04 Meeting

The August Turners 2 meeting was held at Jed Donahue's ranch in Springville. This year the northeastern part of the United States had power. The lights were on and the lathes were running at Jed's this time. The meeting drew about 20 members. Jed did the evenings presentation on prepping large bowl blanks and then getting the most from them using the Oneway Coring System. The photos of the meeting have been posted for your review.

Turners 1 August '04 Meeting

The Turners 1 held their August meeting on Thursday, August 5th at the Maryvale School. There was a good turnout with about 45 members attending. The bulk of the business meeting was dedicated to preparation for the upcoming Erie County Fair Fundraising effort. The time ran short so show and tell was postponed until next month. The evenings presentation, made by Frank Stanko, was on working with Corian. Photos of the meeting are posted.

Mash Bash 2004

The '04 edition of the MashBash was held recently. This M.A.S.H. themed event, organized by UC Coatings owner Norm Murray, raises money for the local Red Cross Chapter. As in past years, WNYWoodturners 2 was well represented with the Mazuchowskis, Saramas, Wierzbickis, and Nora Drogi attending. Many of their turned pieces were donated for auction at the event. There are a few photos of the attendees "in costume".

Turners 2 July '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 July meeting was held at Barb's Barn on July 8th. The meeting drew about 20 members. After a brief business meeting, the balance of the evening was spent turning. We worked on inventory for the upcoming Toy Fest Charity Fund Raising event. Pictures of the meeting have been posted here.

Rockler Freedom Pen Turning Day

On Saturday, June 26th, the Rockler Company featured a Freedom Pen Turning Day nationwide. The local Rockler store on Transit Road participated in the event with members of the local turning clubs demonstrating pen turning, turning pens, and helping customers turn pens for the troops. Thank you to Paul Mazuchowski, Bob Ball, Rich Mialki, Ron Mostel, Ted Borkowski, Jake Debski, and Kurt Hertzog for their time and efforts helping make the day a great success. Between the turners representing Turners 1, Turners 2, Pembroke Woodturners Guild, the Lockport Turners, and the customers, 204 pens were turned for the cause. Photos of the event have been posted.

Turners 1 '04 Annual Picnic

The Turners 1 Annual Picnic was held at Noco Park, in Tonawanda, on Thursday, June 24th. The weather was great for the 60 plus club members and families who attended. Milt Ehrenberg and his wife Grace did a wonderful job again this year pulling together the event. Many thanks to Milt and all of those who helped cook, cleanup, purchased supplies, made desserts, solicited and donated prizes, and more. It was a big success because of all of your hard work. The picnic was a great chance to have a nice cookout and meet the families of the club members, not to mention all of the prizes that were won. Look forward to next year's event. Allentown Arts Festival

The Allentown Arts Festival was held in June and members Steve Imerese and Jed Donahue were participants. Participating in the show is quite an honor. Steve Imerese, with the help of Steve Jr., did the show and enjoyed it very much. They sold some of the Steve's segmented works and learned a lot of things they'll use in upcoming shows. Holland Middle School Demonstration

Jim Hilburger and Barb Berger took the Papa Jim's Tops and Yo-Yo show on the road again. On Monday, June 14th, they visited the Holland Middle school to put on a woodturning demonstration for the 5th graders attending school there. As usual, the demos were enjoyed by all and there were hand-turned pens and tops given to all of the attendees. The teachers got snowmen as well. The photos of the event are posted for your review.

Turners 2 June '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 10th. There was a great turnout for the last "regular" meeting of the season. The competition among the "thank you gifts" for the school was fierce with many wonderful turnings being donated. Congratulations to Jake Debski, Bill Perry, and Rick Wierzbicki for winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places respectively. Jim Hilburger did a great demonstration on turning goblets with captive rings. Rockler Turning Weekend

The Rockler Turning Weekend was held on Saturday & Sunday, June 5th & 6th. The weather was great as the four Buffalo area turning clubs gathered at the local Rockler store. The different clubs were all there to demonstrate woodturning to the customers and to raise money through their turned item sales for their respective charities. Thank you to Ed Jolls for sponsoring the event and to the WNYWoodturners 1, WNYWoodturners 2, Pembroke Woodturners Guild, and the Lockport Turning Club for participating. Turners 1 June '04 Meeting

With the rain finally stopping, the Turners 1 meeting was held on a beautiful Thursday evening, June 3 rd. About 45 of the 80 members attended the meeting. We had a nice assortment of show and tell items. The presentation for the evening was on sharpening. It was made by Kurt Hertzog. The meeting photos have been posted.

Mark St. Leger Demo and Hands On Workshops

The WNY Woodturners 2 hosted Mark St. Leger for a weekend of demonstrations and hands-on workshops Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 22nd through 24th. In addition to Mark, we were also fortunate to have Bob Rosand and Linda Van Gehuchten as well. Storms closed major airports on the East Coast preventing Mark from traveling to Buffalo on Friday. The Saturday morning demonstration began on time with Bob Rosand and Linda Van G filling in for Mark as the weather finally allowed him to fly to Western NY on Saturday morning. Take a look at the late night preparations. The demonstration attendees got a great morning of demos from Bob and Linda until Mark arrived late morning. After lunch, Mark filled the afternoon with an interesting demo of his projects. There were great raffle items. All of Bob's, Linda's, and Mark's demo pieces were won by a no cost raffle among demonstration attendees. Photos of the demo are posted.

Mark did two days of hands on workshops on Sunday and Monday at Barb's Barn. The hands-on sessions were sold out. This was the first event we had to use the lathes Barb purchased with the AAW grant. It added three new, VS Mini Jets to the barn allowing us to retire some of the old equipment. Pictures of the Sunday session are posted for your enjoyment. Turners 2 May '04 Meeting

The May Turners 2 meeting was held on Thursday, May 13th. There was a nice turnout for the meeting in spite of the extremely hot day. The show and tell had many interesting items as did the donation table for the school. Paul Putt, our demonstrator, did an excellent job at explaining and demonstrating his methods for adding adornments to his turnings by carving and coloring. Take a look if you couldn't attend.

May '04 Turners 1 Meeting

The May Turners 1 meeting was held on Thursday, May 6th. It was a warm evening and there was a big crowd for the meeting. The Hilburger award was presented to this year's recipient, Kurt Hertzog. South Town Wood Carvers Show

The South Town Wood Carvers Annual Show was held at the Erie County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, May 1st and 2nd. As is customary, they invited the WNY Woodturners 2 to attend the event and demonstrate woodturning. We were allowed to take donations for our sponsored charity for the items we turn and give away. We collected $204. for the Preschool Center for the League of the Handicapped. Rich Mialki did the orchestration of our participation and was joined by many of the members. Thanks to Rich Mialki, Paul Mazuchowski, Jake Debski, Jed Donahue, Paul Putt, Ed Katz, Jim Hilburger, and Ron Mostel for helping make the event a big success. Walnut Donation

The children of Don Almeter donated his stash of walnut logs to the members of the WNY Woodturners. Don, a long time member of Turners 1, and his wife passed away recently in an automobile accident. Don had a massive supply of Walnut logs that his children donated to the club members, free for the taking. Jim Hilburger got a few pictures as the members took advantage of the Almeter's kindness.

Sharpening Session at Pembroke High School

The latest all day sharpening class was held at Pembroke High School on April 24th. The free class, taught by Kurt Hertzog was open to the members of the Turners 1, Turners 2, and Pembroke Woodturners Guild. The day covered safety, selecting and setting up a grinding system, wheel selection and care, tool steels, tool geometries, jigs and fixtures, and grinding techniques and tips. Over the course of the day, everyone attending had a chance to properly shape and sharpen their entire collection of tools.

Turners 2 April '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 meeting for April was held on Friday, April 2nd because of the school vacation schedule. It was unfortunate that a smaller than usual crowd was able to attend. There was a great presentation on fluting made by Paul Mazuchowski. Photos of the meeting and demonstration are posted.

Turners 1 April '04 Meeting

The April Turners 1 meeting was held on April Fools Day. The weather was terrible with rain trying to turn to snow. In spite of the weather, there was a nice turnout for the meeting. The presentation was made by Bob Ball on making wooden stemmed goblets. Take a look at the photos if you were unable to attend.

AAW Grant helps purchase lathes for Barb's Barn

The AAW educational grant that was awarded to Barb Berger was used to purchase additional lathes and chucks for use at the Barn Sessions. With the help of Ed Jolls, and the Rockler Company, the grant covered a large portion of the costs for three new Jet Variable Speed Mini-Lathes and three Oneway Talon Chucks. Jim Hilburger made and donated adjustable stands for the lathes. Take a look at the pictures of the day everything was picked up and taken to the Barn. Reinforcing Fundamentals at Barb's Barn

Saturday, March 20th, was a Barb's Barn session dedicated to reinforcing the fundamentals. Set aside for the new turners to learn them and not-so-new turners to reinforce them. The instructor was Kurt Hertzog. The day covered equipment setup, correct tool sharpening angles, sharpening, tool handling, cutting techniques, and more. Ken Hertzog helped taking the pictures of the Barn session.

Bowl Turning at Barb's Barn

Following his demonstration at the Turners 2 meeting on Thursday, March 11th, John Lunney taught two hands-on bowl turning sessions at Barb's Barn. The Friday and Saturday sessions brought in 10 students each day. Jim Hilburger was there both days to help John. The teaching and the cameraderie were great. Turners 2 March '04 Meeting

The Turners 2 March meeting was held on Thursday, March 11th. The meeting drew a good sized crowd with about 45 members attending. The featured demonstrator was John Lunney. John put on a great bowl turning demonstration at the meeting. John, a past member who has since relocated, was visiting the area. He not only did a fine meeting demo but two days of hands-on bowl turning on Friday and Saturday. You can see the meeting photos if you missed the meeting.

March '04 Turners 1 Meeting

February '04 Turners 2 Meeting

The Turners 2 February meeting was well attended with about 45 members there. The presentation consisted of 4 different demonstrations. The demonstrations were simultaneous so the members could select the one they were interested in or migrate from one to another. Thanks to Paul, Bud, Rich, and Jake for putting on the demos. Rockler Turning Winner

Steve Imerese, a member of Turners 1 and 2, was the winner of the Rockler Annual Woodworking contest in the Turning Competition in our area. Steve's winning turning was one of his segmented pieces. Steve won a $100 gift certificate to Rockler and is in the comptetition for the national winner. You can see a photo of Steve's winning piece here.

February '04 Turners 1 Meeting

The February Turners 1 meeting was held on Thursday, February 5th. The presentation was done by Steve Imerese on the design and fabrication of segmented turnings. Steve, who had also done the presentation for the Turners 2 club, did an excellent job and sparked a lot of interest in segmented work. You can see the meeting photos if you were unable to attend. Native American Children Demonstration

Kurt Hertzog put on a turning demonstration for the children attending the after school program for Native American children. The kids all attend a once a week, after school program called CHENAC (Cultural & Historical Events for Native American Children) where they learn about their Native American heritage. Guest presenters are often brought in to teach other items of interest to the children. Kurt's children attend the program (Mohawk) and he was invited to present woodturning to the kids. Colden Elementary School Turning Demonstration

Jim Hilburger and Barb Berger took the Papa Jim's Top and Yo-Yo Demo to the Colden Elementary School. Always a favorite, Jim wowed the kids with his "under two minutes" top turning and painting. The kids had a great time watching the turning and there were tops, pens, and snowmen for the kids to take home. Photos of the demo are posted for your enjoyment.

Turners 2 January '04 Meeting

The January meeting of the Turners 2 was held on Thursday, January 8th. There was a good turnout for the meeting. The demonstration was made by Steve Imerese. Steve displayed his segmented works, from his earliest to latest. It was a great presentation covering the material selection, design techniques, construction methods, and tips and tricks of turning and finishing. Steve did a great job of de-mystifying the segmented works beliefs held by the audience. The photos of the meeting are posted.

Turners 1 January '04 Meeting

The Turners 1 January meeting was held on Wednesday, January 7th. The change was caused by other events at the school. Next month we'll be back on our 1st Thursday of the month schedule. The meeting drew a nice crowd. The demonstration was done by Jim Vasi. Jim explained the techniques he uses for the planning and making of segmented turnings. We also had a visit from the Thomas Sy, the Executive Director of Aspire. Thomas presented the club with a plaque in appreciation of the years of support for the needs of the children in the program. Tops Turning at the Toy Museum

The WNYWoodturners 2 was invited to demonstrate turning at the Toy Museum during their Christmas season. For three Saturday afternoons, we demonstrated turning and sold tops to raise money for charity. Photos of the weekends there are posted for your review. Over the three afternoons, we raised $419 for charity. Thanks to Jim Hilburger, Barb Berger, and Kurt Hertzog for their efforts on behalf of the club.

Project Aspire Toy Drop-Off

The WNYWoodturners 1 had the completion of the year's effort for Project Aspire (formerly UCPA) with the toy drop-off on Thursday, December 11th. The work on the project usually begins in February and ends with our Santas delivering the toys to the kids in December. Jim Shimwell has led the effort for years and this year's effort was superb. The club works on toys for the kids during the year and they are collected for the "drop-off day party". Photos of the event are available. A special thank-you to all of the Santas who helped deliver the toys and thank-you to all of the club members who made toys for the kids.

Turners 2 December '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 December meeting was held on Monday, December 8th. The evenings event was the annual fundraising auction. This had been postponed from the weather cancelled November meeting. There was good crowd for the meeting with about 50 members in attendance. There was plenty of great items for auction and some great bargains. It was a fun evening with the club treasury benefiting. Turners 1 December '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 December meeting originally scheduled for December 4th was cancelled due to an event at the school. The toy drop off for the Aspire project was held on Wednesday, the 3rd.

WNY Woodturners Doings Around Town

On Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, there were a couple of events doing around town. The Papa Jim's Top Show was being hosted at the Toy Museum in East Aurora. Jim Hilburger, with his 2 minute top turning demo, along with Barb Berger were invited to the Museum. They spent the day amusing the kids and adults alike. Take a look at the event. Meanwhile "on the other side of town", Jim Vasi and Kurt Hertzog were demonstrating at the Rockler Store. Jim and Kurt were invited to demo for the crowds at the After Thanksgiving Sale. Turners 2 November '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 November meeting was cancelled due to the bad weather. The snow and high winds forced the closing of the schools that day. Whenever the schools are closed for the regular school sessions, they are unavailable for our meeting. The annual auction will be rescheduled for another meeting.

Recent Barb's Barn Sessions

There were two Barb's Barn turning sessions in November. The Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th sessions were on Sharpening and the Skew respectively. The Saturday group of nine spent the entire day learning about and doing sharpening. Over the course of the day, all of them shaped and sharpened their entire collection of tools. On Sunday, there were 13 students, each with their own lathe going, as each of the students learned how to master the skew chisel. The instructor for both days was Kurt Hertzog. Turners 1 November '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 November meeting had good attendance with about 50 members attending. The show and tell featured everything from miniature snowmen to dyed Box Elder burl bowls. The featured presenter was Eric Scott. Eric presented his techniques for carving and sculpting into his turnings. It was a very interesting presentation. Turners 2 October '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 9th at the Hamburg Middle School. The meeting was well attended with about 50 members attending. The annual elections were held for next year's officers. There was a nice display of show and tell items with everything from flying angels to carved eggs. Turners 2 September '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 September meeting was held at the Hamburg Middle School. We are back at the school for the balance of the season after our summer site changes. The meeting was well attended with about 40 of the members attending. A presentation of a framed version of the recent newspaper article about Jim Hilburger was made by Paul Mazuchowski. The article about Jim brought many curious attendees at the Erie County Fair to the fund raising booth. They came to see Jim in person. The evening's presentation was made by Jed Donahue. Turners 1 September '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting was well attended with about 45 members attending. The results of the Erie County Fair were announced. The club raised more than $5300 for the Make A Wish Foundation. There was a nice show and tell selection as well as a great presentation by world famous top collector, Don Olney. Take a look at the photos of the meeting if you couldn't attend.

Turners 2 August '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 August meeting, at Jed Donahue's ranch, coincided with the power black out that hit the Northeast part of the US and Canada. While many lost power, there were whole areas that had no power interruptions at all. Jed had no power so with no lights and no lathes to run, the meeting was cancelled. For the few who showed, we took a few photos of "our meeting". Pity there was a small crowd after Jed labored long and hard to clean the shop.

Erie County Fair

The Erie County Fair is over and the group did their usual super job. Take a look at the photos of the event. There was a terrific effort by the work crews and the others who pitched in. Lyle Foell, the fair chairperson, and all of the volunteers raised a record $5367 for Make A Wish in the Buffalo area. Thanks to all who had a hand in making it a great success.

Turners 1 August '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 August meeting was held on Thursday, August 7th. The turnout was pretty light with only 35 or so members attending. It was a very hot summer's night and the Erie County Fair started that day. Many of the members we there manning the booth. It is the traditional charity fund raiser at the Fair with items being turned and sold for our supported charities. The Treasurer announced that since they had started keeping track, the club had donated over $20,300. to the Buffalo area charities. There was a very nice show and tell for the evening. Rich Crino, the evenings demonstrator, did a great job explaining his techniques for making a low cost, yet very elegant, bird feeder. Take a look.

Sharpening & Skew Workshops at Barb's Barn

There was a two day workshop held at Barb's Barn on Saturday and Sunday, August 2nd and 3rd. The instructor for both sessions was Kurt Hertzog. Attendees could attend either day or both days, depending on their schedules and interests. The Saturday session was focused entirely on sharpening and cutting fundamentals. The whole day was spent teaching the proper angles tools should have and how to put those angles on the tool. Every kind of grinder and jig was available so the students could sharpen their entire tool set. The day also included the basics of stance, balance, tool handling, and tool techniques. Sunday's session was devoted entirely to the skew chisel. The day included the types, the various grinds, sharpening the skew, and the different cuts that can be made with the skew. The attendees not only had demos but many hours of practice and projects. Take a look at the photos of the workshops.

Turners 2 July '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 meeting was held at Barb's Barn on Thursday, July 10th. The meeting was moved inside the barn because of the rain. The turnout was light as many must have thought it was cancelled due to the weather. About 20 members showed up to enjoy the demonstration by Harry Hunt. Harry, dressed in the garb of the day, demonstrated the making of a three legged stool using the tools of the 1800's. He split the wood for the seat and the legs, prepped them with a foot adze and the shaving horse, and then turned one of the legs on his replica treadle lathe. Harry and his replica treadle lathe were featured at the AAW Convention held in Providence RI last year. Take a look at the pictures of the meeting.

AAW 2003 Pasadena Symposium

Your fearless webmaster had the opportunity to attend the 2003 AAW Symposium held in Pasadena. With over 3000 photos to sort through, it'll take a bit before I have the pages with the whole event ready for posting. I did complete the photos of the Instant Gallery. Turners 1 July '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 July meeting was a cookout at Sheridan Park. The Noco Pavilion was booked for the entire day so people could come and go at they pleased as well as play golf at the adjacent golf course. Around 4 PM, the bulk of the folks showed up and we had better than 70 attend. It was a great opportunity to meet the spouses of the members you've known for so long. The food was excellent and plentiful as were the drawing prizes. Take a look at the photos if you weren't able to attend.

Mash Bash 2003

UC Coatings owner, Norm Murray, invited the local woodturning groups to take part in this year's Mash Bash. The Mash Bash is a M.A.S.H. themed fund raising event for the local Red Cross Chapter. WNYWoodturners 2 Treasurer and Vice-President, Paul Mazuchowski and Rich Sarama and their wifes took part in the event. Paul and Rich turned several beautiful pieces to donate for auction at the event. There are a few photos of the attendees and their donated turnings.

Bob Rosand Hands On Sessions at Barb's Barn

The Friday and Saturday after the Turners 2 June meeting with Bob Rosand were set aside as hands on days at Barb's Barn. The Friday session was slanted towards skill building, including sharpening. The Saturday session was set for lidded boxes. Both days had full houses with 10 or 11 lathes going in addition to Bob's. Turners 2 June '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 June meeting was very busy. We had over 50 members in attendance for the Bob Rosand demonstration. The evening was also the last regular meeting for the season to be held at the school. As such, turned gifts for the school staff were collected and judged. Results of the voting on the turnings will be available shortly. The evenings presentation was two demonstrations by Bob. He did one of his signature lidded boxes, from beginning to end, and turned a sphere. The photos of the meeting and demo are posted for your enjoyment. Turners 1 June '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting drew over 50 of the club's members. There was a nice showing at the show and tell of a wide variety of turnings. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Jim Hilburger award. This year's recipient was John Paulin. The demonstrations for the evening were focused on various facets of turning. We had 4 mini lathes set up and running with a demonstration at each so the members could migrate between them per their interests. The demonstrators were Jim Vasi, Jim Hilburger, Bob Ball, and Kurt Hertzog. The photos of the meeting are posted for your viewing.

Rockler Customer Appreciation Day

The local Rockler store held a customer appreciation day on Saturday, May 31st. Ed Jolls invited all of the local woodworking clubs to participate at the store. The Turners 2 setup shop and demonstrated along with selling turnings for charity. Paul Mazuchowski and Jake Debski demonstrated for the club. In addition to the Turners 2, Pembroke Woodturners Guild, WNY Scrollers, and the South Town Woodcarvers had display areas and demonstrations going on. Utah Woodturners Symposium 2003

Your fearless Webmaster had the opportunity to attend the Utah Woodturning Symposium again this year. The event, as in the past, was a great time for seeing other work, learning from some of the world's best, and an all around fun time mingling with other turners from all over the world. At this year's event, we also held the first gathering of the Yahoo Pen Turners Group. This internet group, numbering over 1000 members, held an evening get together before the Symposium and had a joint display of work from many of the members. Turners 2 May '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 May meeting was held on May 8th and had a good turnout. Ron Hudson was not able to attend so Rich Sarama did the honors of leading the meeting. The presentation for the evening was made by Paul Mazuchowski. Paul demonstrated the making of a turkey call. See the meeting photos.

Carvers Show 2003

The Carvers Show was held on Saturday and Sunday, May 3rd and 4th. There was a small group of Turners 2 who joined the Carvers Show to demonstrate woodturning and make items to sell for charity. Jed Donahue, Jake Debski, Ron Fultz, Roger Harris, Bob Harrington, Sam Cicca, Rich Mialki, and Jim Hilburger all pitched in and worked at the show. They also got a chance to try out Jim's new camera system. You'll be seeing at the club demos in the future. Jim Hilburger's photos of the event are posted.

Turners 1 May '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 May meeting was held on Thursday, May 1st. There was a good turnout for the meeting. The presentation was made by Bob Warhaus of Rockler. Turners 2 April '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 April meeting was held on Thursday, April 10th. There was a good crowd for the meeting. The meeting followed the recent demonstration and hands-on workshops with Johannes Michelsen. The show and tell was filled with hats made at Sunday and Monday hat workshops. Take a look at the meeting photos. The evening's presentation was made by Nora Drogi. Nora, a finishing expert with the local Rockler store, gave an excellent presentation and question and answer session.

Johannes Michelsen Demo/Workshops

On Saturday April 5th, WNYWoodturners-II hosted Johannes Michelsen, renowned for his wearable wooden cowboy hats. The all day demonstration was held at the Charles Lindbergh Elementary School in Kenmore. The demonstration was lightly attended, which was unfortunate as Johannes put on an excellent demonstration covering everything from sharpening to tool techniques. While it was all focused on making wooden hats, there was plenty to be learned by any turner. The photos of the demonstration are posted for your enjoyment. The Sunday and Monday hands-on workshop photos went very well with each of the attendees having a chance to make a mini hat under the watchful eye of Johannes. Turners 1 April '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 April meeting was attended by only 27 members. The freezing rain conditions made travel a problem and many members didn't make it to the meeting. Those that were able to make it enjoyed a good show and tell and two excellent presentations. There was an "ask the expert" session with Jim Vasi, Jim Hilburger, and Frank Stanko. They fielded questions from the audience regarding all facets of woodturning from glues to finishing. After that presentation, Frank Stanko did a demonstration of using a microwave oven to dry green wood. The technique allows for recently cut wood to be turned and dried in a very short time without the usual checking and cracking that plagues green wood turning. Turners 2 March '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 March meeting drew about 50 members. There was a wide variety of items for the show and tell ranging from bowling pin creations to a giant nutcracker. The Jack Brown ornaments were raffled off with Linda Spors and Jake Debski each winning one. The demonstration was made by Jed Donahue. Jed, known for his large vessel and platter turnings, demonstrated how to turn a plate. Jed used one of the mini lathes and an expanding chuck. Take a look at the photos if you missed the meeting.

Turners 1 March '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 March meeting drew about 45 members. There was an nice variety in the show and tell. The evenings presentation was made by Nora Drogi from Rocklers. Nora did a great presentation on the various finishes available to turners. She also covered preparation techniques and application tips and tricks. Turners 1 February '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 February meeting brought a good sized crowd. There was a good selection of turnings for the show and tell. The evenings presentation was made by Rob Pelc. Rob is the owner of Advantage Lumber. Rob did an excellent talk on the conservation, selection, use, and identification of exotic woods. He also brought several blocks of exotic wood turning blanks that we given away by drawing to the attendees of the meeting. If you couldn't attend, take a look at the pictures of the meeting.

Western NY Woodworker Show

The Western NY Woodworkers Show was held on Friday through Sunday, January 31st through February 2nd. As usual, the show management donated a space for both the Turners 1 and Turners 2 to demonstrate woodturning and raise money for local charities. Members donate their time and materials so that 100% of the effort and funds raised go directly to the selected charities. Jim Hilburger took some photos of the booths for both clubs. Turners 2 January '03 Meeting

The Turners 2 January meeting was held on Thursday, January 9th. The turnout was light because of the preditions of bad weather. The storms never hit but it's unfortunate that it kept members away from an excellent meeting. The show and tell was good and the demos were great. Turners 1 January '03 Meeting

The Turners 1 held their January meeting on Thursday, January 2nd. There were about 40 members in attendance despite the inclement weather. The evenings presentation was made by Ron Mostel with the turning assistance of Jim Hilburger. The topic was inside out turning. Jim Hilburger provided articles on the subject written by Ellis Hein. Ellis has been doing and writing about this style of turning for some time. If you missed the meeting, take a look at the photos. The UCP Toy Drop Off

On Tuesday, December 17th, members of the WNYWoodturners made their "Santa's Visit" to the local United Cerebral Palsy Association. They were distributing toys that the members of the club have been making for months for the kids. This annual event is one of the highlights of the holiday season. The kids are always thrilled with the hand crafted toys and it brings great pleasure to our members to be able to support such a worthy cause. Pictures of the visit are posted for those unable to attend. Turners 2 December '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 December meeting was the annual auction night. The members brought in items to donate to the club for auction raising money for the treasury. The lidded box class from the recent Barb's Barn session also brought in their turning efforts. It was a fun evening with a great show and tell along with the auction. On Saturday, December 7th, eleven members of the Turners 1 and Turners 2 gathered for a lidded box workshop at Barb's Barn. It was a full house and we had thirteen lathes going. Kurt Hertzog was the instructor with Barb Berger and Jim Hilburger helping out. Everyone made at least one lidded box in Mahogany during the class. Take a look at the photos of the workshop.

Turners 1 December '02 Meeting

The December Turners 1 meeting was election night. The officers for next year were voted on. It was also drop off night for all of the toys for the UCP Christmas effort. Take a look at the photos of the meeting.

Turners 2 November '02 Meeting

There were 40 or so members attending the Turners 2 November meeting. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of an award to Jim Hilburger. The award, named in honor of Jim, is the Jim Hilburger Giving Tree Award. It is given in honor of an individuals ongoing efforts and continued giving of themselves. Congratulations Jim! Turners 1 November '02 Meeting

The Turners 1 November meeting was held on Thursday, November 7th. There were about 40 members in attendance. The meeting focused on getting the Christmas toys done and brought to the December meeting. Jim Shimwell, filling in for Carm Queeno, covered the needs and plans for delivery. The evenings demonstration was techniques for making "identical" turnings by hand and making stick pens. Photos of the meeting have been posted.

Beginner's Day at Barb's Barn

Saturday, October 26th was "Beginner's Day" at Barb's Barn. The goal was to cover fundamentals and build skills. There were only 5 attendees as many had to drop out but with 3 instructors, there was plenty of one on one time. Hands On Woodturners Visit

On a recent visit to Florida, I had the chance to visit the Hands On Woodturners. I missed their regular meeting, but Ron Browning invited me to one of their regular Sunday evening "Sawdust Sessions". I have posted some pictures of that session if you care to take a look.

Turners 2 October '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 10th and had a turnout of about 50 members. The annual elections were held. Rich Sarama was elected VP with all other officers being re-elected. The evenings presentation, made by Webmaster Kurt Hertzog, was on lidded boxes. Turners 1 October '02 Meeting

The Turners 1 October meeting was the annual auction. The members brought in their donations and they were auctioned off to raise money for the club. The meeting drew over 50 of our 80 members and was a lot of fun. The club raised $468 from the auction. Take a look at the October meeting photos.

Turners 2 September '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 September meeting was back at Hamburg Middle School after our summer relocations. There was a good turnout with about 45 members showing up for the meeting. The demonstration was done by Ron Mostel on inside and outside turning. Jim Hilburger also did a snowman demo as well. Take a look at the pictures of the meeting.

Turners 1 September '02 Meeting

The Turners 1 September meeting was held on Thursday, September 5th. There was a great turnout with over 50 members showing up. Lyle Foell, Erie County Fair Chairman, reported that the fundraising effort at the fair raised $3812 for the Buffalo area Make-A-Wish Foundation. The evenings demonstration was put on by Jed Donahue. Jed, from the Turners 2 Club, demonstrated Jim Hilburger's rendition of the boring bar system with laser thickness measuring. Pictures of the meeting have been posted.

Erie County Fair Fundraising Event

In the usual tradition, the Western NY Woodturners had a booth at the Erie County Fair for the duration of the fair. The space on the porch is used to sell turned items for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. All of the materials, turning, and time is donated so 100% of the sales go to the charity. Lyle Foell, the Fair Chairman, and many of the members spent many long hours running the sales booth and demonstrating woodturning at the lathe setup on the porch. Thanks to all of the members who spent time helping this worthwhile event by working the booth and/or making items for sale there. There is a photo spread of the event located here.

Turners 2 August '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 August meeting was held at Jed Donahue's house. It was a great summers evening their was a good turnout for the meeting. The featured demonsration was Jed doing deep hollowing. Jed demonstrated virtually all of the deep hollowing tools and techniques he has used over the years. It was a great meeting and very enlightening. Take a look at the meeting photos.

Turners 1 August '02 Meeting

The August meeting was held on a sweltering evening on Thursday, August 1st. There was a good crowd of about 45 members in attendance. The meeting demos were put on by John Lunney, Bob Ball, and Jim Hilburger. All of them were demonstrating the techniques used for items for the Erie County Fair charity fundraiser. Turners 1 Library Display

The WNY Woodturners 1 had a turning display in the new Clarence Library, on Goodrich Rd, all during the month of July. It was comprised of over 100 pieces from members of the club and was located in their display cabinets in the entry foyer. Photos of the display are located here.

AAW Symposium in Providence

I have been trying to put together a coherent article on the recent AAW Symposium in Providence. Having limited success, I have decided to post the initial efforts knowing that only about 1/3 of the work is done. Here is the first part with the rest to follow as soon as I can get it together.

Turners 2 July '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 July meeting was held on Thursday, July 11th at Barb's Barn. The demonstrator for the meeting was Harry Hunt from Waleska, GA. Harry demonstrated his hand-built, foot operated treadle lathe. He calls his business "Turn of the Century". The meeting was well attended and was lots of fun. Jake Debski was the lucky winner of the Craft Supplies gift certificate from among the show and tell participants. The meeting photos are here.

Utah Woodturner's Symposium 2002

In early June, your fearless webmaster had the opportunity to attend the 23rd edition of the Utah Woodturner's Symposium held in Provo. This is believed to be the longest running woodturning event of it's kind. It is held at Brigham Young University and runs for three days. The day before the symposium features an open house, sale, and demonstration day held at the nearby Craft Supplies. After sorting through the 800 or so photos I took at the event, I have created 12 pages that cover the Craft Supplies event as well as the three days of the Symposium. Take a look.

Papa Jim's Latest Tour

Jim Hilburger, chief architect of the Papa Jim's Traveling Top & Yo-Yo show, had a demonstration at the Providence RI Children's Museum. Jim was invited to perform at the prestigeous museum in conjunction with the 2002 AAW Convention being held in Providence. The theme for the conference was tops and how better to celebrate tops than with Jim's "from chuck to spinning in under two minutes" show. As usual, Jim was a big hit and all of the kids got their own top to take home. Jim also did a demonstration at the convention. They had Jim setup next to Don Olney's top collection. Turners 2 June '02 Meeting

The Turners 2 June meeting was the last meeting to be held at the Middle School until fall. There was a good turnout for the meeting. As usual, the club donates gifts to the school in appreciation for the facilities use. There was a nice collection of donations from Sam Ciccia, Don Lamb, Bill Perry, Jake Debski, Paul Mazuchowski, Ron Mostel, and Gerry Rucker. The evenings presentation was made by John O'Neil. John is a member of the nearby Rochester Woodworkers Society and has invented a "vacuum gouge" that cleaverly picks up the turning chips as you cut. Goblet Turning at Barb's Barn

Turners 1 June '02 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting brought out over 50 of the members. The club is experimenting with a new format for the meeting. It leads off with the show and tell, then a short break, then the presentation, followed by the business meeting. The presentation was a demonstration of the website made by the webmaster, Kurt Hertzog, along with some interesting sidelights about the statistics and infomation about our site's visitors. Turners 1 May '02 Meeting

The May 2nd Turners 1 meeting had a big turnout. The 55 plus (more showed up after the count) members were treated to a great meeting. The Hilburger award for outstanding contributions to the club was awarded to Ray Bissonette. The evenings presentation was several demonstrations including basic turning techinques, pen making, top making, and turning green wood. Along with the demonstrations were hands on for all who were interested. Take a look.

Charity Fund Raiser at the Carvers Show

The Turners 2 held a charity fundraiser at the Woodcarvers Show over the weekend of April 27 th and 28th. The rules had them setup shop outside the building to keep the dust and chips outside. The weather got ugly on Sunday but the volunteers stuck it out for both days to raise money for charity. Take a look at the photos of the event. There was a good turnout for the April Turners 2 meeting. The weather has finally started to break and it was a warm evening. Jake showed off a new Jet mini lathe, donated to the club by Ed Jolls, manager of the local Rockler store. The guest presenter was Paul Mazuchowski. Pen Turning Workshop at Barb's Barn

On Saturday, March 16th, Rich Sarama taught a day long workshop on pen turning at Barb's Barn. We had a full class with lathes for all. Rich did a great job lecturing, demonstrating, and working with all of the students. He covered the basic 7mm pen and the kitless, Papermate style, pen. A good day of fun, learning, and turning. There was a great turnout for the March meeting. We had 40 members out of the 80 attend. The club welcomed 7 new members to the club. The presentation for the evening was made by Roger Harris. Corian Turning Demo

Frank Stanko presented a Corian turning demonstration to about 20 local turners at Art Specialties International on Tuesday, March 12th. Ken Dolph, President of ASI, was our gracious host and treated all to pizza and pop as well as the use of his facility. Frank did a great presentation on not only turning and finishing, but assembly of multiple layers of Corian to achieve desired thicknesses or color combinations. Ken answered questions and also demonstrated some Corian bonding techniques. Pictures of the event are available for those not fortunate enough to attend.

Turners 1 March '02 Meeting

The Turners 1 March meeting was well attended. The show and tell brought everything from turning tools made from allen wrenches to how to curl live plants. The demonstration was "turning goblets" by none other than the President, Jim Vasi. Take a look at the photos of the meeting here.

Turner's 2 January '02 Meeting

The Turner's 2 January meeting was held on Thursday, January 10th. There was a good crowd attending, with lots of interesting Show and Tell items. 2002 WNY Woodworking Show

Both the Turner's 1 and Turner's 2 had booths at the 2002 Western NY Woodworking Show. The clubs' efforts were to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation and the Pre-school Learning Center of the League for the Handicapped respectively. As usual, all of materials and time was donated, yielding 100% of the funds for the charities. Many members of both clubs made items as well as worked the booths, selling and demonstrating. Turner's 1 January '02 Meeting

In spite of the recent heavy snowfalls, the January Turner's 1 meeting was attended by about 40 members. D.J. Reynolds from UC Coatings made a presentation on the uses and benefits of Anchorseal. Elmer Baumer made a presentation on vacuum chucks. The photos of the meeting posted for your review.

UCPA Toy Delivery

Carm Queeno, with the help of Jim Hilburger, Bob Ball, Jim  & Jacquie Shimwell, Art Greibner, Bob Greibner, Dave Korn, and Ted Borkowski, delivered the toys made by the club to the kids at the UCPA. The Santas were warmly received and did a great job. Jim Hilburger took photos of the event. Thank you to the Santas and to all of the members who helped with the effort. It was special for everyone.

Turner's 2 December Meeting

The Turner's 2 December meeting was the annual auction and elections. The attendance was very good. Everyone came to look for the great bargains. The elections were held and last years' slate of officers was re-elected. Take a look at the meeting photos and captions.

Turner's 1 December '01 Meeting

The Turners 1 December meeting was held on Thursday, December 6th at Maryvale School. This meeting was the dropoff date for all of the toys for this seasons' charity donation. The featured presenter was Jim Vasi demonstrating segmented bowls. Take a look at the meeting photos. Ken Miller, who took the meeting photos, created a very nice PhotoParade slide show of Jim's demonstration. A Visit to Willie Simmons' Shop

Those who attended the recent Barb's Barn session will remember Willie Simmons. Willie was the instructor for the stool making classes. I had a chance to visit with Willie and get a tour of his shop. Take a look at the photos.

Turner's 2 November '01 Meeting

The Turners 2 November meeting had a good crowd of about 25 members on Thursday, November 8th. There was a very interesting show and tell with everything from stools to hats. The presentation was made by John Lunney. The meeting photos are located here.

Turner's 1 November '01 Meeting

The November meeting of the Turners 1 was held on Thursday, November 1st. It was the annual auction. Take a look at the show and tell as well as the auction.

A Day with Willie Simmons at Barb's Barn

Eighteen members of Turner's 1 and 2 had the pleasure of spending a day at Barb's Barn learning how to make stools. Willie Simmons, from Fincastle VA, was the instructor and taught the group both the turning and weaving techniques required. Willie makes stools at his shop in Virginia and sells them a several shows each year. The Friday class had 11 students and the Saturday class had 7. Everyone learned a lot and left with either a nearly complete stool or the know how and materials to complete their own. Take a look at the photos if you couldn't make it to the class. A Day with Brian McIntosh

Recently, I had the pleasure of touring Brian McIntosh's workshop and spending the day with him. I took plenty of photos to share with the group. A professional turners workshop is setup and run as just that, a production shop. Whether they do high volume or low volume, it is run to make a living. Everything is organized to be efficient and convenient since wasted time equates to lost revenue. Take a look at the photos and see what you think.

John Lunney's Bowl Workshop

John Lunney hosted two days of bowl turning workshops. John, well known for his beautiful bowls, had 20 members of the Turners 1 and 2 spend a day with him. John went from an idea and a log to a finished bowl. The workshop was enjoyed by all. Jim Hilburger took some photos of the event. Take a look.

Turner's 2 October '01 Meeting

The Turner's 2 October meeting was held on Thursday, October 11th. The meeting had a great turnout. The show and tell items were very interesting, particularly Jed's bullet ridden bowl. Elmer Baumer did the feature presentation on vacuum system construction. The group was also treated to the Hamburg High School Homecoming rally, complete with the traditional bonfire. Turner's 1 October '01 Meeting

The Turner's 1 October meeting was a great meeting. The turnout was large and the presentation was very well done. Elmer Baumer did an exhaustive presentation on the building and troubleshooting of a vacuum system for a lathe. If you couldn't make it, you can take a look at the pictures.

Turner's 2 September '01 Meeting

The Turner's 2 September meeting was held at the Hamburg Middle School. The featured speaker was Jim Meier doing an in depth safety review. Jim did a great job covering the available safety items. Take a look at the meeting in photos. The September newsletter is available as well.

Pepsi Center Fundraiser

Art Griebner recently found a few photos of the Home Sweet Home Show held May 10-13, 2001 at the Amherst Pepsi Center. The Turners 1 had a booth there to demonstrate woodturning and sell turnings as a fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation. There are only a few shots but they do show the booth, Art, and our recently departed friend, Vic Kolber. Take a look.

Turner's 1 September '01 Meeting

The Turner's 1 September meeting was held at the Maryvale School on Thursday, September 6th. Fourty seven members of the club attended the meeting. Kurt Hertzog made the presentation on the techniques and tools for "piercing" of turnings. The photos of the meeting are here.

Hilburger Workshop Visit PhotoParade

Ken Miller visited Jim Hilburger's workshop to get some photos for the member's galleries. Erie County Fair Charity Fundraiser

As usual, the Turners 1 had a booth at the Erie County Fair to demonstrate and sell their turnings to raise money for Make-A-Wish. There are two pages of pictures of the event. Take a look at page 1 and page 2 of pictures of the event. The event raised $3500 for charity over the course of the fair.

The Turners 2 August '01 Meeting

The Turners 2 August meeting was held at Barb's Barn. There was a good turnout with about 25 members attending. The guest speaker for the evening was Brian McIntosh. Brian, a professional turner from Canada, did a great job demonstrating three projects that can be done quickly and use up some of the cutoffs from the shop. AAW Instant Gallery Photos

The Hilburger Top and Yo-Yo Tour

Jim Hilburger has delighted youngsters for years with his turning demonstrations. Jim prides himself in chucking, turning, decorating, and delivering a completed top in less than 2 minutes. It takes a close watch to catch it all. Recently, Jim took the "traveling yo-yo and top factory" on the road again. See the event at the East Aurora Toy Museum.

The Turners 1 August '01 Meeting

The Turner's 1 August meeting was a scorcher. Though the night was hot and muggy, 45 or so of the members turned out for a great meeting. The instant gallery was very nice and the presentation by John Lunney was excellent. Take a look at the evening's events.

The Turners 1 July '01 Meeting

The Turners 1 July meeting featured the Rockler Challenge. The challenge was to create something from the two pieces of wood provided. Everyone participating started with the same 3/4 by 6 by 12 pieces of both maple and walnut. The challenge projects would be displayed at the local Rockler store and then auctioned for charity. Take a look at the creations that the club members contributed.

The Turners 2 July '01 Meeting

Jed Donahue hosted the July meeting of the Turners 2. It was held at Jed's Ranch in Springville. The demonstration for the evening was green bowl turning using a bowl coring system. Jed treated everyone to a great demonstration. Take a look at the pictures.

The 800# Iron Oak Burl

Rich Sarama and Paul Mazuchowski found and bought an 800+ pound burl. It is Iron Oak and has a pretty interesting story. Take a look at the pictures and find out more about it here.

Art Specialties International Field Trip

Thursday evening, June 21st, Art Specialties International President, Ken Dolph, hosted us at his facility. Ken will made a great presentation about Corian®, it's cost, it's history, it's working characteristics, and availability. The evening featured the presentation, demonstrations, pizza and pop, and take-home kit of Corian®. If you couldn't make it, you missed a great time. Take a look at the photos and write-up.

The Turners 2 June '01 Meeting

The Turners 2 June meeting was the last meeting until the fall. The next meeting will be at Jed's Ranch on Thursday, July 12th. There was a good crowd in attendance with lots of great show and tell items. The demonstration for the evening featured Bill Perry. Bill demonstrated how to capitalize on the unique characteristics of Norfolk Pine. Take a look at the events of the meeting.

The Turners 1 June '01 Meeting

The Turners 1 June meeting was held on Thursday, June 7th. The guest speaker for the evening was Frank Stanko. Frank did a demonstration on making lidded boxes. The attendance was very good and the group enjoyed an excellent presentation. Take a look at the meeting photos.

The Turners 2 May '01 Meeting

The Turners 1 May '01 Meeting

The May meeting was held on Thursday, May 3rd at the Maryvale school woodshop. The guest speaker was a carver visiting from Canada. At the meeting, Vic Kolber was awarded the Jim Hilburger Award for selfless contributions to the organization and it's benefactors. Also, that evening, the club received an award from the Make a Wish Foundation for it's contributions to that organization. Take a look at the evening's events.

Turning at Barb's Barn

The tradition of turning at Barb's Barn was continued with another class held on Saturday, March 24th. From 9 am until 3 pm, there was plenty of chips, lecture, and one on one instruction. Another great class. Take a look at the day in pictures.

The Hamburg Woodworkers Show

This year's woodworker's show, held at the Hamburg Fairgrounds, was well attended. Both Turners 1 and Turners 2 had booths at the show. As in past years, both clubs used the booths to sell turned items to raise money for charity.
