The Presidentís Corner by Kurt Hertzog

We had a rather small crowd for the July meeting at Jed Donahueís place. Too bad as it was a great time and Jed had the barn air conditioned and very comfortable. The group spent the evening watching demos of various craft fair items and then had hands-on instruction by Jed and Jim Hilburger. We covered doorstops, whistles, tops, bottle stoppers, and more. These learning opportunities are great for our newer members. Itís a chance to work with our more experienced members and get some very personalized instruction. Take advantage of these sessions whenever you can.

Last month, I threw out the question regarding new officers. So far the response has been zero. One of the ways you can give a bit back to the group is by taking a turn as one of the officers. Itís not very difficult and anyone willing to put forth the effort will be able to handle any of the jobs. Donít leave it to someone else all of the time. Please let me know of any interest so we can make sure we have a slate of nominees for the upcoming elections.

This monthís meeting is at Barb Bergerís in Elma. Weíll have the same kind of session as we did last month. Weíll have show and tell so donít forget to bring your stuff. After that, weíll have some hands-on turning and some demos in preparation for the Fair. Bring your items that youíve already turned to donate. You can also work on items at the Barn. Remember, weíll start at 7:00. You can be a few minutes early if you wish. Car-pooling will really be helpful if you can manage it. The parking is a bit limited.

Iíve just returned from the Utah Woodturners Symposium in Provo and the AAW Symposium in Kansas City. While Iíll get to the pictures and post them on the web, I canít be sure how soon. I will be doing a slide show of both events at the Pembroke September meeting (9/13). If you wish to attend, you are welcome to be my guest. The meetings are at 6:30pm at the Technology shop in Pembroke High School. The school is located just off of the 48a exit of the Thruway. Plan on attending if youíd like to see photos of the events. If you need additional instructions, let me know.

Thanks,

Kurt

Secretary Gary Jones Report

There werenít enough members for a quorum so I will go over a few things discussed at the gathering. We still need volunteers for the fair. Jim Hilburger has gate passes and parking permits. We are not renting a space for toy fest we will demo in the toy museum. Kurt showed pens he made using acrylics and rice very nice. Jake and I took the gifts to the school staff. This is the first time I have done this. They were very well received - thanks to all.
