Business Items: Jim Vasi reported the East Aurora library thanked us for the video. Jim welcomed the new members who were present, Norm Bittner, Kevin Devine, Jay Elliott and Garrett Schwenk. Please note the names of the other three (3) new members on the enclosed “Members Jan – Dec 2004” list. All eighty (80) members and two (2) honorary members have been mailed a copy of this list. Members please note if you are listed as having an e-mail address, you will receive e-mail notification only when future newsletters have been posted on the www.wnywoodturners.com website. There are 49 of you that will be notified by e-mail. The remaining 33 members will be sent hard copies of the newsletter thru the regular mail. This month all 82 members will be sent copies of this newsletter and the 2004 members list by regular mail.
Milt Ehrenberg asks for volunteers to share their knowledge and present demonstrations at future meeting. Please contact Milt at 837-7989 if you are interested. A friend of Milt’s donated wood to the club and was sold at the meeting. Bob Ball will demo making wooden stem wine glasses in April and Eugen Schlaak will demo dyeing for wood turners in May. Don’t forget the Picnic, June 24th, at the Noco Pavilion. Call Milt if you can help. All welcomed Lloyd Crissman to the meeting. He has been taking Chemo treatments at Roswell and is feeling somewhat better. Welcome Back Lloyd!!! Also welcome back Clair!!!
It was reported the John Lunney “Hands On Bowl Turning Session” was complete booked. Great! Also reported there were still a couple of openings for the Barn Session on March 20th. All were reminded of the Mark St. Ledger Demo/Workshop on May 22nd, at the Charles Lindbergh school in Kenmore. Also don’t forget the “Rockler Turning Weekend” at Rockler Store, June 5th, and 6th. Lloyd Crissman reported there will be a Woodcarver’s Show at the Erie County Fairgrounds on May 1st, and 2nd. Eugen Schlaak stated there is a Woodcarver’s Show in Niagara Falls, Ontario on March 27th, and 28th. Call him for details.
Show & Tell: Dave Korn –pair of wood lamps, Frank Stanko – bowls with comments on reverse chucking. Noted your options for reverse chucking are, vacuum, jam, padded donut, or wood-steel-plastic jaws. Also had a challis, lidded box, wonder box, and nested raw edge wood bowls (3). Eugen Schlaak – box elder, and manzantier vases. Jim Schnellinger - bowls & pens. The pens were made from materials from Fibron Wood & Composite Products, 170 Florida St. Buffalo, NY 14208, tel 886-2378. Great raw material they will sell you at a reasonable price. Demo: Marwin Feldman passes out “A different Approach to Segmented Turning”. Talks about using various tools, to produce slabs of different kinds of woods. Gluing them together, cutting them again and ultimately producing a multi segmented block ready for turning. Passed out a “Michael Mode” photo of segemented bowls, curve ball, stretching it, candy stripe, and side to side. All examples of items he has made also. Marwin then went to the lathe and partially turned a piece he will finish at home and bring into the next meeting. THANKS FOR A GREAT JOB. Thanks also for sharing the handouts.
