Utah Symposium '02 - Day 1

Click on thumbnail for full size image

The Utah Woodturning Symposium is held on the Brigham Young University campus

The first morning everyone gathers in the auditorium for a review of the speakers

There are 11 rotations with 10 speakers in each rotation

I first attended Alan Batty's session on sharpening

Alan walked through virtually all of the common turning tools

He then demonstrated the sharpening of each followed some test cuts

The ring tool was one of tools requiring honing only

The three sided point tool is often mishapen by improper grinding

My second rotation choice was Petter Herrud, a Norwegian turner

Petter sets up for his multi-center lidded box turning demo

He turns the box lid and hand chases the threads

Then Petter makes and threads the bottom of the box

By using multiple centers, Petter can make flats or twists on the sides

It's nice to have Bonnie Klein run your camera

The off center turning requires a heavy lathe to dampen vibration

Even nicer to have Bonnie Klein hold the light for you
