Getting setup for the Rockler Penturning demo on Saturday morning

Rockler, nationwide, held penturning demos the week before their 2nd Freedom Pen Turn-a-thon

Even before the 9:30 start, Kurt Hertzog had "customers" interested in the pen demo

On display were a variety of pens, made with kits and without kits ...

also made from a variety of materials, from wood to plastics to rice

After explaining the process, Kurt shows the actual turning portion of making pens

For this example, Kurt uses colored multi-ply to make a 7mm pen

Questions ranged from where to get woods to what equipment does it take to get started

After completing the pen, the group gives it an examination

The location inside the front door worked great in attracting attention to the demo

Kurt works on another pen

There was a lot of give and take with the audience

Kurt shows his sanding technique and the importance of slowing the lathe speed

Of particular interest was the available finishing materials

Kurt assembles a pen using his "hitech" Quick clamp without the cushioned softjaws

A different group of potential penturners

The audience examines the skew chisel that Kurt usually uses for penturning

Those attending ranged from young to not so young

The group asks questions regarding the durability of various finishes

This young man examines the fit and finish on the most recently done pen

This lady, a non-turner, is interested in learning how to turn pen, among other items

Some of the other pens on display give some ideas of the extent of the possibilities

It was a good day with lots of interest

A quick vacuuming and the equipment get packed, ending a successful day
