Masaaki Hiroi, a 3rd generation wooden top turner, from Japan was a featured demonstrator

He spoke very little English and there was an interpreter to narrate his demonstration

By comparison to ours, Mr Hiroi's lathe, tool rest, and tools are very different and crude

His tools are hand made from old files

A better look at one of his tool tips

This is the extent of his tools used to make tops ...

from a nested set like this to ...

a miniature set like this

Wood is held on the lathe by simply pounding it on to a sharpened hollow tube

The lathe is a simple motor with a moveable wooden tool rest

The tool rest and tool are moved in unison to present the tool as desired

All sharpening is done with a simple stone

Mr Hiroi hollows his top to fit the multiple internal tops

Once the inside is done, the top is reverse chucked on a jam chuck

That jam chuck is again only held on the lathe by the hollow tube

Mr Hiroi works on the top of the top

The top is decorated with a fast drying water paint ...

followed by a burnished on coat of Carnuba wax

The internal tops are loaded and ...

the string is wound around the top
